Amendment 1 will appear on Louisiana’s Nov. 3 ball Amendment 1 will appear on Louisiana’s Nov. 3 ballot and would allow the surviving spouse of a qualifying veteran with a service-connected disability to make a one-time transfer of the additional property tax exemption to a new qualifying home.

What could this change mean for a surviving spouse?

Under current law, an eligible surviving spouse can continue receiving the veteran’s additional property tax exemption after the veteran’s death, but only while remaining in the same home. If the spouse moves, the exemption does not transfer.

Amendment 1 would allow the surviving spouse to transfer that exemption one time to a new home that qualifies for the homestead exemption. The amount transferred could not exceed the exemption claimed on the previous home.

For the surviving spouse of a disabled veteran who relocates, the amendment would allow a one-time transfer of the additional homestead exemption. There are presently 386 homes in St. Charles Parish with the additional disabled veteran exemption.

Amendment 1 would not require a separate local election in St. Charles Parish. If approved by voters statewide, the change would apply statewide.

Amendment 6 will appear on Louisiana’s Nov. 3 ball Amendment 6 will appear on Louisiana’s Nov. 3 ballot and would allow parishes and municipalities to offer an additional property tax exemption to qualifying homeowners age 65+ who receive the homestead exemption and qualify for the Special Assessment Level, commonly known as the “Age 65 Freeze.”

But what could this mean for you or your loved ones?

The amount of the additional exemption would increase by age, as shown in the graphic. This would be in addition to the existing homestead exemption.

A statewide approval would not automatically put the exemption into effect in St. Charles Parish. If Amendment 6 is approved statewide, St. Charles Parish voters would still have to approve the exemption in a separate local election before it could apply here.

If approved statewide and subsequently approved by St. Charles Parish voters, the additional exemption would be available beginning Jan. 1, 2028.

(Please note that the chart shows estimated savings based on current St. Charles Parish property tax rates. Actual savings will vary.)
